みなさんは早稲田大学大学院情報生産システム研究科の修士課程をこのたび修了されることになりました。今回が９月修了の第３回目の修了式です。Fコースの学生も含めて、修了生は全部で３５名、そのうち留学生が３３名います。
９月修了と３月修了を比較しますと、９月修了の学生の割合が増えておりますし、また留学生の比率も上昇しつつあります。
この事は、情報生産システム研究科が徐々に国際的大学院として認められるようになってきたことを示していいと思います。
今後とも、日本人と留学生の数がバランスのとれた、アジアのみならず世界に開かれた大学院を目指していきたいと考えております。
みなさんの２年間の大学院生活はいかがだったでしょうか。高度な専門知識を修得できたでしょうか、又、今後の社会生活の中で大変重要となってくる未開拓の分野に挑戦していく力を身につけていただけたでしょうか。あるいは、みずから新しいものをクリエートする喜びを経験していただけたでしょうか。
みなさんは早稲田大学大学院情報生産システム研究科での学生生活を通して、このような力を体得していただけたものと信じております。
さて、今回の修了生の中には、博士課程に進学する人達が１１名おられますが、これらの方には、ぜひ世界に発進できるような研究を行っていただきたいと思っております。
世界の著名な学術雑誌に論文を投稿することも大変大事です。単に論文の数だけではなく、論文の質の向上にも挑戦して下さい。実は、私は大学人になる前、30年間ほど民間の電機メーカーの研究所に勤めていたのですが、その時、先進技術を模倣するのではなく、世界に発信できるユニークな技術・製品の研究・開発が企業の発展のためにいかに重要であるかを肌で学びました。
他人が開発した技術の模倣あるいは簡単な変更のみでは競い合ってはいけません。
今後、日本をはじめとするアジアの国々がglobalな大競争時代に競い合っていくためには、他の場所で研究された先進技術をブラッシュアップして価格性能比の高い製品をつくっていくだけでなく、苦しくても、みずから新しい技術を創造していく事が強く求められています。ぜひこのようなことを念頭において新しい技術の創造に努力してほしいと思います。
博士課程の学生の間にぜひ著名な国際学術論文誌に新しいアイディアを盛り込んだ論文を投稿していただきたいと思います。
次に実社会に出て行かれるみなさんにいくつかのコメントをさせていただきたいと思います。
まずはじめに、学校と実社会は基本的に異なるということです。それでも、20〜30年前の日本の場合、特に大企業の研究所の場合には、大学と似たような雰囲気がありました。入社してきた新人には社会人のイロハを組織的に学ばせる場もありましたし、また、オンザジョブを通して文章の書き方や研究の進め方をきめ細かく指導する先輩達が多数いました。なにより、入社したての若手に「何を研究開発するのか自分で考えなさい」、といった指導を行う余裕がありました。
しかし、グローバル大競争時代に直面した最近の企業は様子ががらっと変わってきています。大学で修得した技術や研究開発を推進していく力に対して給料を支払うというスタンスになり、先輩達からの手取り足取りのきめ細かな指導も期待できなくなってきています。そういう意味で、この大学院で学んだことを十二分に発揮して頑張ってほしいと思います。
次に、留学生のみなさんにお願いしたいのですが、ぜひみなさんの母国と日本の架け橋になってほしいという事です。この２年間でみなさんは日本の国がどのような国であるか、あるいは日本人がどのような国民であるかという事を学ばれたことと思います。
日本がみなさんにとって良い国であったことを期待していますが、場合によっては、必ずしも良い印象ばかりではなかったのではないかと少し心配しています。
しかし、悪かった点はご容赦いただいて、ぜひ良かった点を母国と日本との関係構築に生かしてほしいと思います。
第二次世界大戦以前は自国の経済は比較的独立していました。しかし、インターネットで世界中の出来事が瞬時に伝わる時代、開発・生産・物流が世界レベルで連動する時代には、お互いの国々の協力なくしては大きな発展は望めません。
先日、上海交通大学電子信息与電気工程学院と早稲田大学大学院情報生産システム研究科は、Gコースに関する学術交流に関する覚書に調印しましたが、その折、鄭学院長も米国だけでなく、今後は日本との交流を深めていきたいと話されていました。また、同様のことを台湾国立大学、韓国ソウル大学の先生方も話をされていました。
私ども早稲田大学大学院情報生産システム研究科も、今まで以上にアジアの国々の多くの大学と学生交流・共同研究などに関して交流を深めていく予定です。
日本で少なくとも１年間生活したみなさんは、母国と日本との架け橋に一番近い存在です。ぜひ、母国と日本との友好関係に努力していただきたいと思います。
以上、２、３コメントをさせていただきましたが、みなさんが素晴しい未来を築かれていく事を期待して挨拶にかえさせていただきます。

Graduation Ceremony Speech (September 2007)
Good afternoon, everyone. Congratulations on your graduation from the master’s program at the Waseda University Graduate School of Information, Production, and Systems! This is our third graduation ceremony for students graduating in September. Including the F-Course students, there are 35 graduating students in all, out of which 33 are international students.
Comparing the September graduation with the March one, the proportion of students graduating in September is growing and the percentage of international students is also increasing. This reflects the fact that IPS is gradually gaining recognition as an international graduate school. We will continue to aim to make IPS a graduate school with a good balance of Japanese and international students and one which is open, not only to Asia, but to the world.
How were your two years here as a graduate student? I hope you have acquired a superior level of specialist knowledge and the ability to tackle unexplored fields that will become very important in your future life in the outside world. I hope you have experienced the joy of creating something new from scratch yourself during your time here.
I believe that you will have all acquired these sorts of skills through your student life here at the Waseda University Graduate School of Information, Production, and Systems.
Out of this graduating class, there are 11 students who will proceed to the doctoral program and I hope that these students will carry out research that we can be proud to announce to the world.
To have papers published in world-renowned scientific journals is an extremely important thing. You should not just think simply in terms of the number of papers and articles that you produce, rather you I would like you to also take on the challenge of improving their quality. Actually, before I became an academic, I worked as a researcher for a private sector electronics manufacturer for about 30 years. During that time I learned firsthand just how important the research and development of unique technologies and products that can be disseminated to the world is to the development of a company. A company must not compete by just copying or making simple modifications to technologies that have been developed by others.
In order for Japan and other Asian countries to compete on an equal footing in this extremely competitive global age, not only must we polish and refine the cutting-edge technology being researched elsewhere and produce cost-competitive, highly functional products, but we will also be required to create new technologies from scratch ourselves, even if it is difficult to do so.
I hope you will all bear this in mind and work hard to create new technologies.
Next, I would like to make some comments to those of you who are about to embark on your journey into the world beyond the university.
First, the world here at university and the world beyond are fundamentally different. Having said that however, in the case of Japan 20 to 30 years ago, particularly in the case of the research laboratories of the leading corporations, the atmosphere was actually quite similar to the university environment. There was a place for new recruits in the company to systematically learn the basic knowledge of their superiors. In addition, there were many people in the company who could teach new recruits in detail about how to write documents and how to proceed with research in the form of on-the-job training. And more than anything, there was sufficient breathing space to guide and supervise young new recruits, and allow them to think freely about what they wanted to work on in terms of research and development.
However, in today’s corporations which are facing an age of mega-global competition, things have changed dramatically. The stance of corporations now is that they are paying you for the skills and ability that you acquired at university and they expect you to push ahead with research and development. So you cannot expect or hope to be spoon-fed with attentive guidance or support from those who have joined the company before you. In that sense, I want you to go all out and fully exercise and demonstrate what you have learned here at university and fulfill your potential.
Next, is a request to the international students. I ask you all to become a bridge between your home country and Japan. I believe that in the two years you have been here, you have learned something about what sort of country Japan is, and what sort of people the Japanese are.
I hope that you have all got a good impression of Japan, but I am a little concerned that in some cases, perhaps things were not necessarily always positive. However, I hope that you can forgive the negative points, and I would ask you to utilize the positive things to help build cordial relations between your home country and Japan.
Prior to World War II the economies of individual countries were relatively independent of one another. However, in an age where world events reach us instantaneously via the Internet, and development, production, and distribution are inter-connected on a global level, major progress and developments cannot be expected without mutual cooperation.
Just recently, the School of Electronic, Information, and Electrical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and IPS signed a Memorandum of Academic Exchange in relation to the G-Course of study. When we signed the agreement, Dean Professor Dr. Zheng spoke of his desire to deepen ties, not only with the United States, but also with Japan. We here at IPS, also plan to deepen exchange relations more than ever with many universities in other Asian nations in such areas as student exchanges and collaborative research. In addition, professors from National Taiwan University and Seoul National University in Korea, have also been discussing the same thing with us.
Those of you who have spent at least one year living here in Japan, are the closest thing there is to being a bridge between your home country and Japan. You are a great asset. I ask you please, to work hard to promote friendly relations between your country and Japan.
In conclusion, I have high hopes that you will all build wonderful futures. I wish you all the best.

みなさん、早稲田大学情報生産システム研究科への入学おめでとうございます。
みなさんは本大学院の第５期生ということになりますが、修士課程が８７名、博士課程が２２名、そのうち留学生が１０１名です。したがって、我々の大学院は博士課程と留学生の割合が非常に多いということが特徴のひとつになっています。
留学生が多いのは、早稲田大学が創立の時からそうであったように、我々の大学院もアジアで活躍する人材を育てるという事を大きな目標のひとつに掲げているからです。又、博士課程の学生が多いということは、我々の大学院が学部のない独立大学院であるということからも自明のことではありますが、産学連携も含めまして、研究活動を活性化し、世界に発信する研究・開発のCenter of Excellenceを目指しているからであります。
今回の入学式の特徴は、早稲田大学情報生産システム研究科と学術交流に関する覚書（Memorandum of Academic Exchange）を調印したアジアの多くの著名な大学から優秀な学生が多数入学してきていることです。しかし、中には日本語がまだよく分からない方もいるかと思います。そのような場合には、ぜひ担当の先生方と相談してください。多くの先生方が学生さんの語学のレベルに合わせて、日本語あるいは英語の授業を行うことになっています。
さて、みなさんは早稲田大学大学院情報生産システム研究科に入学されて、今、あれもやりたい、これもやりたいと希望に満ち溢れていることと思います。ぜひ初心を忘れずに頑張ってほしいと思います。
ところでみなさんにお願いしたい事を２、３述べてみたいと思います。
早稲田大学情報生産システム研究科は御存知のように学部のない独立大学院です。従って、ここでの教育は今までの小学校から学部までの教育とはまったく異なることをはじめに理解していただきたいということです。
小学校から学部までの教育は、基本的には今までに確立されてきた技術を教え、学生はそれを学ぶということが中心でした。極端な言い方をしますと、技術を理解し記憶すればよかった訳です。
大学院ではそうではありません。修得した技術をベースに、みずから考え、創造していく事が強く求められます。勿論、研究室の指導教員の大きな方針にそって研究・開発を進めていく訳ですが、具体的に考えるのはみなさんあなた方自身です。
ぜひ、早稲田大学に在籍する間に考える力、創造する力を身につけてほしいと思います。 これは、社会に出た時にまず要求される大事なことだと思います。
次に、今後ますます顕著になる技術変化のはげしい時代に対応していく能力を身につけていただきたいということです。

大学院では、研究室に配属になり、研究室の専門技術を修得することも大事ですが、それ以上に、研究・開発を行っていく力、研究内容をきちんと文章化し分かりやすく説明する力、英語で技術に関する議論が出来る力等、総合的な技術開発力を身につけてほしいと思います。
いいかえると、自分の修得した技術以外の未知の技術にも挑戦していく意欲と問題解決する能力を身につけてほしいということです。
何故なら、変化のはげしい時代には、10年たてばほとんどの技術は陳腐化し、新しい技術が生まれてくるからです。高度な専門技術と同様に、未開拓の技術に挑戦する力をぜひ身につけてほしいと思います。
第３のお願いは、少し次元が低いお願いかもしれませんが、大切なことなので一言述べさせていただきます。
それは、人間関係の達人になるための技術の修得です。自然の生態系における共生関係の中には、競争、搾取の中に、利他Altruismという関係があります。これは、自分を犠牲にして相手のためにつくすという関係です。よく親鳥が自分は犠牲になってもひな鳥を守るという行動の中にこれをみることが出来ます。
Altruismとまではいかなくても、相手の事を考えて行動する事はよい人間関係を築く上で非常に大切なことです。また、これはお互いに協力して大きな仕事を進めていくための基本となる大事なことです。
みなさん、若いうちは将来への夢、希望、野心のために自分中心になりがちであり、またこれはこれで非常に重要なことですが、ちょっと、自分を客体化して、少し相手の立場に立って考えるという習慣も身につけてほしいと思います。
以上、いろいろな事を申し上げましたが、今後、情報生産システム研究科での充実した学生生活を送られることを期待して私の挨拶といたします。

Entrance Ceremony Speech (September 2007)
Congratulations to all of you on the occasion of your entry into the Waseda University, Graduate School of Information, Production and Systems or, IPS. You are the fifth batch of students to enter our graduate school: there are 87 students undertaking the masters program, 22 students doing doctoral studies, and out of these, 101 are international students. Thus, one of the unique features of our graduate school is that the proportion of doctoral and international students is very high.
The reason we have so many international students is because, just as it has always been since the time Waseda University was established, one of our graduate school’s major aims is likewise, to educate and train human resources who will play an active role in Asia. In addition, that there are so many doctoral students is self-evident from the fact that our graduate school is an independent one with no undergraduate schools attached to it; but it is also because we aim to be a Center of Excellence that fosters research activities in cooperation with industrial sector partners and can proudly present its research and development to the world.
The special feature of this particular entrance ceremony is that many outstanding students from several elite universities throughout Asia with whom the Waseda University, Graduate School of Information, Production and Systems has signed Memoranda of Academic Exchange are here to take up their studies. I believe that some of those students will still be having difficulty understanding the Japanese language. If that is the case for you, please do not hesitate to consult with your supervising teachers. Our school is set up so that many teachers conduct lessons in either Japanese or English according to their students’ language level.
I am sure that having now successfully entered IPS, you are brimming over with excitement and expectation at the moment and wanting to try many things. I would ask you not to forget that initial fervor and your objectives, and to do your very best.
By the way, I have two or three things to ask of you that I would like to talk about now.
As I mentioned earlier, IPS is an independent graduate school with no undergraduate schools attached to it. Therefore, I want you to understand first of all, that the education you will receive here is totally different to what you will have experienced from elementary school through to the undergraduate level.
The education from elementary school level through to undergraduate level basically teaches already established knowledge and the focus is just on the student learning that. To put it in the extreme, it is sufficient merely to study the information and memorize it.
Graduate school is not like that. Students are required to use the skills and knowledge they have acquired throughout their school and undergraduate education as a base, think for themselves and be creative. Of course, you will carry out research and development under the overarching ethos and guidance of the academic supervisor of your lab, but the one who is responsible for doing the concrete thinking is you, the student. While you are enrolled here at Waseda University, I want you to equip yourselves with the ability to think independently and to be creative. This is because I believe that these are important skills that will be demanded of you first and foremost, as you set foot out into society and the world of work upon graduation.
Next, I want you all to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge that will equip you to deal with what will be remarkable changes in technology that will take place from now on in the dramatically changing age that we live in. At graduate school you will be affiliated with a research lab, and acquiring the specialist skills and knowledge of your research lab will be very important. However, even more importantly, I also want you to acquire a comprehensive technological development ability including the ability to write up your research work properly, the ability to explain your research work clearly and in an easy-to-understand way, and the ability to discuss and debate technical matters related to your field in English.
In other words, I want you to develop the desire to take on the challenge of acquiring new knowledge about technology outside of that which you have acquired in your own specialist area, and to develop problem-solving skills.
The third request I have to make of you may be on a slightly less lofty plane, but as it is very important, I would like to talk about it for a moment. That is, acquiring skills to make you adept at interpersonal relations.
Within the symbiotic relationships that exist in natural ecosystems and amongst the competition and exploitation, there is also a relationship known as ‘altruism’. This is a relationship wherein one sacrifices oneself for others. This can often be seen in the case of birds for example, where the parent bird sacrifices itself to save its chick.
Even if it may not go quite as far as altruism, to act with consideration for others is a very important skill essential to building good interpersonal relationships. In addition, altruism is an important factor that is fundamental to, and necessary in order to cooperate with others when working on large-scale projects.
When we are young, we have a tendency to be rather self-centered as we focus on our own dreams, hopes and ambitions for the future; and although this is, in itself, a very important thing, I want you to acquire the habit of looking at things from someone else’s point of view. Put yourselves in others shoes, so to speak.
In conclusion, I hope you will all enjoy a very fruitful and rewarding time as students here at IPS.
